Animation School

A former motor vehicle workshop in the industrial part of Woodstock was transformed into a fully integrated school for computer animation. The refurbished building now incorporates all the specialised technical and academic facilities for 170 students.

We extended the client’s original brief by proposing a dormitory facility, which now accommodates 24 out of town students, and provides an additional income stream for the school.

‘The numerous local and international awards won by Animation School graduates are a testament to the creative and inspiring environment which we designed.’

Since the original structure could not support the additional floor required for the dormitory, our concept of a ‘building within a building’ provided the solution with the design of a new lightweight structure, entirely independent of the existing envelope.

Our studio provided full architectural and interior design services for all aspects of the school, including customised furniture and lighting throughout.

We have continued our involvement with the school, completing two further phases of the project; an additional third year classroom, and a production studio and office where post-graduate students gain their first work experience.

Responding to strict zoning requirements to maintain the existing envelope, we designed the new spaces partially within the roof space, with the addition of dormer windows for extra headroom, and added a deck which provides a welcome connection to the exterior.

The numerous local and international awards won by Animation School graduates are a testament to this creative and inspiring environment.
