Origin Coffee Roasters
Origin was the first of a new generation of coffee roasters to incorporate responsible sourcing and artisan roasting and brewing into Cape Town’s coffee culture.
A meeting of the minds between the owner and Leon Saven Design saw our studio reinvent Origin’s headquarters in Hudson Street.
Our approach to an authentic, crafted and carefully considered design dovetailed with Origin’s emphasis on hands-on mastery of all aspects of coffee crafting, and has resulted in an authentic, honest landmark destination in the de Waterkant area.

Originally spread over three floors of a historic de Waterkant building, we helped to rationalise Origin’s operations, streamlining their roasting house, wholesale sales facilities, barista school, bakery, and café-style eatery onto two floors.
The ground floor was redesigned to improve the layout of the café, and a new retail display wall, and point of sale area with barista counter were custom designed, together with new guest toilets clad in dramatic black steel panelling.
The introduction of the bakery onto this level enhances the customer experience with flavours, colours and bakery aromas, while outside at street level, two new service counters offer a glimpse into the café as well service to the sidewalk seating area.
The first floor houses offices, a new kitchen and storage area, barista school, and a roasting, packing and despatch area.
A new jewel-like glass enclosed Roasting Box suspended between Origin and the adjoining contemporary Hudson building allows passersby see into the heart of the roasting process both from the street and the upper courtyard level.
A future phase of renovations will include a link from the café up to the first floor by means of a large opening through the floor structure, with a new staircase to access the barista school, roasting area and additional seating.
