Family Home Green Point

A previously ordinary home on a steep site stretching between two parallel streets, was transformed for a young creative family wanting to upscale their lifestyle.

The original entrance was on a noisy street, while an under-utilised yard behind the house, had a small gate onto a quieter and more desirable street, with beautiful views.

By moving the main new entrance to the rear of the site, we quite literally created a new address for the home, with an outdoor entertainment and pool area which takes advantage of the light and views over Green Point and the Atlantic Ocean.

‘The new garage pavilion, with wide sliding doors opening onto the pool area, doubles up as a covered recreation area for the family.’

The new addition was achieved by means of a major retaining wall to define the new upper level, and is clad in maintenance-free dark-tinted concrete blocks, especially manufactured for the project, which are a feature of the new elements of the home.

The new garage pavilion, with wide sliding doors opening onto the pool area, doubles up as a covered recreation area for the family, creating a safe, all-weather play area for the children and their friends.

The house, now accessed from the upper level, has a steel and frameless glass entrance hall and staircase with lightweight steel and timber stairs leading down to the main house on the lower level, with timber shutters for sun screening and privacy.

In the new open plan kitchen, dining and living area, new slot windows integrated into the design of the kitchen rear wall bring in natural light, and stacking doors open onto a private courtyard with a water feature.

Oregon pine salvaged from the original roof structure, finds new life and purpose as a mobile dining table, sanded down and fixed to a custom designed steel frame, on castors.
